Aim:

- To research and create a presentation on the differences between the Olympic Games in ancient Greece compared to the modern Olympic Games and the importance of exercise for mental and physical well-being.

Students were split into groups of three and were given instructions on how to use the internet to research the Olympic Games. Students used these instructions to create a presentation on the importance of physical exercise in ancient Greece and how the Olympic Games was created. Then they created slides on modern Olympic Games and the importance of physical exercise to British people and themselves personally.

The groups presented their powerpoints to the rest of the class and then held discussions on the questions and ideas that each presentation arose or provoked. Then, they were asked to discuss the ideas and beliefs of the ancient Greeks in regards to physical exercise and the purification of the soul compared to their own ideas and attitudes towards physical exercise and mental well-being.

- Students were able to learn about the ancient Greeks' belief that you had to do exercise to purify the soul and then reflected on their own approach to eating and exercising. Several students admitted that they did not complete enough, if any, exercise whereas others shared their personal exercise routines. This promoted a positive attitude towards fitness and doing exercise because students discussed different ways of getting exercise into their daily routines and one student asked whether they could complete an "Olympic Games day" at school later in the year.
