The students were presented with body part wordsearches in Romanian, Italian and Spanish and they had to determine which language was which. This sparked a group discussion about the similarities and differences between the languages, such as similar words for body parts and any links that they have with French (that they learn in ASA) and English. We explored the use of symbols to aid pronunciation in foreign languages, which helped raise their general cultural awareness as well as prompted students to question rules in, and explore, their own language.
All groups produced a poster with body parts labelled in up to four languages (including English) and had to ensure that accents were used correctly and the spelling of similar words between the languages were spelt correctly. They were able to point to the correct body part when asked in Italian, Romanian and Spanish. The students expressed pleasure in learning the languages spoken by their partner schools and highlighted that Italian and Spanish has more similarities than Romanian had with either Italian or Spanish.
