Snow fighting in the woods

In spite of severe weather conditions which are common in the north of Poland in January, we tried to encourage students to spending time outdoors. In order to provide a goal for hiking in the woods surrounding Gdansk we proposed geocaching. Geocaching basically focuses on looking for clues which are hidden in places which geocachers are suposed to find with the use of GPS system. Students were divided into four groups and each group, taking turns, led the game searching for stashes where caches were hidden. Each of the places caches were found in carried a story related to Gdansk the city. The game, taking place in the forest, provided an opportunity to practice orienteering, being close to the nature, spend time outside in spite of frost and plenty of snow. It encouraged students to playing with the snow, making snowballs, snow fighting, sliding or chasing each other. All these activities carried outside were likely to improve students’ phisical agility and strength and stimulate them to be closer to nature.
